Fixing old stories

A long time ago, I started to write short stories. I did not know they were short stories at the time, or did not want to call them so. They were just stories that were short. I wrote ideas, plots, characters. In my mind, they were novels. Now that I start looking at these “old” stories again, I am surprised that they are only a couple of pages long.

Maybe it was meant to be, because in my head, they were a hundred pages long. I could not have written more on these topics at the time, I had no idea how to delay the plot, describe the scenery. I was young, went straight to the point, no time to mess about and get to know the characters. Get in and get out!

What I do now is: use the material I have

I have started to look at my old stories with a new eye. I re-write them with more details. I try to get the reader, not just me, to see what it is all about. In my head, the characters are clear, but in paper, they are not.

I also compile my short stories together and look for links between them so that they can be published as a series, just like the Lunch Break Love Stories where I try to match stories together. A good example is Satisfy my Soul: I put together two stories after receiving feedback from readers that they both gave out the vibe of being content with one’s life.
